At Temple Beth Sholom, we are committed both to the Jewish education that takes place in the classroom as well as that which takes place informally and outside the classroom.
As such, TBS sponsors youth groups such as Kadima (open to 7th and 8th graders) and United Synagogue Youth (USY) (open to Grades 9-12). USY and Kadima are international youth groups sponsored by the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. Conservative synagogues across North America sponsor USY and Kadima groups (also known as “chapters”). During the year, we run programs for this age group.
USY and Kadima run all kinds of programs, ranging from social to community service to shabbatonim (conclaves or conventions over Shabbat hosted by a synagogue). USY also offers the opportunity to travel during the summer throughout North America and all over the world through its fabulous summer programs.
TBS also sponsors a USY basketball team each year where we play against other USY chapters in Queens and Long Island. We have many winning seasons behind us and many more to come!
While different programs have different costs, there is an annual membership fee for Kadima of $25 and for USY of $36. For students of Machon Beth Sholom, this fee is already included in your MBS tuition.
The USY and Kadima programs are wonderful ways to broaden a teen’s social network with Jewish teens from all over. It also has the potential to impact teenagers Jewishly and to help in their Jewish growth. Involvement is highly encouraged!
